| 1)The Got-Em-On Scholarship Golf Tournament- Our golf tournament was conceived in 1998 as a fundraiser/ service project, but we needed a cause to make the connection of a fishing club hosting a golf tournament. We decided to let the proceeds benefit fishing. Since The University of North Carolina at Wilmington had an established graduate program and with the internationally recognized Center for Marine Sciences located here in our own back yard, we took the opportunity to create fellowships that benefit graduate students in Marine Sciences at the University. The idea is that students awarded these fellowships will eventually make advances toward improving the conditions of our oceans, help stabilize our deteriorating marine environment, and ultimately bolster declining fisheries. It took a couple of years for the idea of a golf tournament to catch on in the club: let’s face it, we are fishermen. We do, thankfully, have enough golfers sprinkled among us to make this a viable function. Our tournament continues to grow: last year the Club donated $13,000 to UNCW, most of which was applied to the Club’s endowment that was established in 2002. This will be a self perpetuating fund when complete. The University has allowed us to add to our endowment each year while we maintain an active yearly fellowship of $2500. During the tournament’s eight year history, we have donated a total of $74,500 to the University with well over $50,000 in the endowment. Meeting all the recipients has made the experience more personal, and they have all been worthy, deserving, and appreciative of our effort. Many of them have been involved in studies of fish that included Red Drum, Stripers, Bluefish, Kings, and Flounder. Right down our alley!! We would like total Club support so: if you play, join us; if you don’t play, tell a friend who does; and if you own a business, why not sponsor a hole? |
